Prochlorperazine is prescribed for control of severe nausea and vomiting, also used in management of the manifestations of psychotic disorders.
Prochlorperazine is prescribed to treat the nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy, cancer chemotherapy, surgery, and other conditions. It is also used to treat psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and hostility.

A phenothiazine antipsychotic used principally in the treatment of nausea; vomiting; and vertigo. It is more likely than chlorpromazine to cause extrapyramidal disorders. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p612)

Contraindications

Prochlorperazine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
-Do not use in comatose states or in the presence of large amounts of central nervous system depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, etc.).
-Do not use in pediatric surgery.
-Do not use in children under 2 years of age or under 20 lb.
-Do not use in children for conditions for which dosage has not been established.

Without a Prescription

Prochlorperazine comes as a tablet, extended-release (long-acting) capsule, oral liquid, and rectal suppository. Prochlorperazine usually is taken three or four times a day (tablets), or once or twice a day (extended-release capsules).

Although prochlorperazine is not habit-forming, do not stop taking it abruptly, especially if you have been taking it for a long time. Your doctor probably will decrease your dose gradually.

Do not open extended-release capsules; swallow them whole.

Do not allow the liquid to touch your skin; it can cause irritation.

If you are to insert a rectal suppository, follow these steps:

- Dip the tip of the suppository in water.;
- If the suppository feels soft, hold it under cold, running water for 1 minute. Then remove the wrapper.;
- Lie down on your left side and raise your right knee to your chest. (A left-handed person should lie on the right side and raise the left knee.);
- Stand up after about 15 minutes. Wash your hands thoroughly and resume your normal activities.;
- Using your finger, insert the suppository into the rectum, about 1/2 to 1 inch in children and 1 inch in adults. Hold the suppository in place for a few moments.;

Prochlorperazine is a piperazine phenothiazine related to high-potency neuroleptics such as perphenazine. It shares many of the actions and adverse effects of the antipsychotics.
